Meet Diamond, a 27 year old mother of two young children, who dropped out of high school before graduating. She came to Beach House Family Shelter with several challenges, including a poor credit score and little income, which made it difficult for her to find housing.

Diamond engaged with the program at Beach House Family Shelter. She completed Beach House’s intake program, tenant education and retention workshop (certificate provided), and behavioral health services. She is now in the final process for securing safe and affordable housing.

Diamond recently located a housing unit for herself and her children. The landlord has met with case workers and housing staff from Leading Families Home, and is willing to accept the program. An inspection for Diamond’s unit is scheduled for the near future.

Meet LeAnne, a 29 year old mother of two, and her son suffers from medical conditions. LeAnne has her high school diploma. She receives no financial assistance to help her provide for her children.

LeAnne left an abusive relationship and moved out of Hamilton County to distance herself and her children from their abuser. She left with no income and almost no support from friends or family. LeAnne’s mother offers help when she can, but due to medial issues, she isn’t always able to help out LeAnne.

Despite her challenging circumstances, LeAnne has remained optimistic. While in Beach House Family Shelter, LeAnne engaged in clinical therapy and educational programs designed to help her build a better life for herself and her children.  Her case manager notes that LeAnne has gained self confidence, keeps a great attitude, and is excellent at advocating for herself.

LeAnne recently signed a lease on a new housing unit and moved in with her children.

Meet Kimberly, a 25 year old mother of four who receives food stamps and holds a high school diploma.

When Kimberly came to Beach House Family Shelter, she noted that her homelessness was due mostly to her history of substance abuse. Kimberly worked hard to manage her disability, and she is proud to say she has been sober for a year and half.

Harnessing her personal experiences and history, Kimberly is now employed at a substance abuse center in Maumee, Ohio. She uses her past to connect to others and help them find hope.

She and her children have found housing through LFH, and she receives assistance for rent and utilities.

Meet Candace, an older woman with two adult children. Candace sees one of her adult daughters once a week and on weekends, as visitation allows.

Candace’s other daughter, Angela, struggles with a Huntington disease, a “progressive brain disorder that causes uncontrolled movements, emotional problems, and loss of thinking ability (cognition).” ( Learn more about Huntington disease.) Because of her diagnosis, Angela is unable to care for herself, so Candace cares for her.

Angela also visits a mental health provider for preventative services and has additional health issues that add to her limitations. Additionally, Angela has a young daughter for whom she has weekly visitation.

Caring for Angela has impacted Candace’s ability to work, and currently, she works seasonally. Angela receives SSI to help cover medial needs, and both women receive food stamps.

Candace also deals with a heavy emotional burden –  Angela’s father passed away of the same disease years ago, and now Candace must learn to deal with the fact that her daughter may pass away before she does. Thankfully, since coming to Beach House, Candace has willingly accepted mental health services to help her deal with being a caretaker of a sick child.

Thanks to the donations of our amazing supporters, LFH is able to offer Candace several programs and services to help her, including rental subsidies, yearly holiday aid, commodities, budgeting and communication assistance, advocacy, and employment and transportation needs.
